First TransPennine train cleaners to strike over pay

Cleaners working on trains will take strike action tomorrow in a dispute over pay.

First TransPennine, which operates services between Carlisle and Manchester, says it does not expect any disruption to services.

The cleaners are employed by Carlisle Cleaning and Support Services and have rejected a three per cent pay offer.

Their union, the RMT, is seeking a substantial increase in line with the 10 per cent pay award won last year by Carlisle Cleaning staff working on Virgin trains.

RMT regional organiser Craig Johnston said: “None of us wants to be in this position but the company won’t move. These people are basically on not much more than the minimum wage.”

Meanwhile First TransPennine Express has pledged to end overcrowding on trains between Carlisle and Manchester Airport.
