Judging has started for the Cumbria Family Business Awards.

The judges will meet early this month to decide on around 30 family business finalists from more than 200 entrants.

Sue Coulson, event organiser, has been thrilled by the standard of the applications: “These awards feed into larger national family business awards and as such it’s important that Cumbria Family Business Awards truly reflect the quality of businesses in the area. They are certainly rising to the challenge.”

Fellow event organiser Sophia Newton said: “The response was overwhelming, family businesses are clearly held dear to people and are at the very heart of communities in Cumbria.”

Financial support from the business sector has been strong with businesses including Enterprise Answers, Armstrong Watson, Progression Solicitors, Lamont Pridmore, Federation of Small Businesses, and Coulson Associates backing the initiative.

Fellow event organiser Janett Walker of Make It Happen said: “We can’t thank our financial backers enough and in addition support from within the family business community has been invaluable.

“The event promises to be one of the highlights in Cumbria’s events calendar for 2017.”

Finalists will be invited to the black tie awards ceremony taking place at the Castle Green Hotel, Kendal, on Friday, March 10, hosted by Cumbrian advocate, Hairy Biker Dave Myers.

Mr Myers said: “The awards are a great initiative. It’s good to see family businesses getting recognition for the hard work they do. I’m happy to be a part of it.”
