The company behind the proposed nuclear new build in Cumbria says it has found widespread support for the plan in the local area.

Nugen, the developers backing the Moorside nuclear project, have been in consultation with local people for months and found there was a positive reaction to the plans.

Despite this, there were concerns about road infrastructure and housing raised by a number of respondents to the company’s survey about people’s perception of the build.

When asked “Do you agree with the need to develop a new nuclear power station at the Moorside search area?”, local people were overwhelmingly in favour with 73 per cent of respondents saying yes, compared to 15 per cent saying no and 12 per cent being unsure.

The biggest concerns for people were based around the local infrastructure being able to cope with the build and the additional people needed in the local area to build and operate the power station.

Eighty-eight per cent of people favoured the Moorside station being operated solely using the railways rather than transporting goods on the roads, particularly at peak times.

NuGen’s current strategy is heavily focused on the use of rail and the overwhelming support for the railways proposal appears to fit the company’s current plans.

Those who were asked also responded positively to the idea of making any temporary train station at Moorside permanent in order to improve transport and infrastructure links across Cumbria.
