Nugen has taken its first steps towards building three new nuclear power plants on the West Cumbrian coast.

A wastewater treatment plant has became the first facility brought online by NuGen, which is owned by the Japanese multinational Toshiba.

The facility will assist in site characterisation, which is an important aspect of the design and planning stage, by discharging groundwater arising from drilling operations.

The site characterisation will be key to NuGen acquiring licensing and planning applications for the three proposed nuclear plants.

The onshore investigation work is already well underway, with 55 out of 350 boreholes already drilled, which has yielded 2km of samples ready for analysis.

Matt Waddicor, NuGen’s project manager for the site characterisation work, said:

“We’ve made some good progress on site, despite working in some challenging conditions during one of the wettest Cumbrian winters in recent years. “As the weather improves, we are looking towards starting the offshore element of the investigation work which will provide more valuable information for the development of NuGen’s proposals for the Moorside Project.”
