An apprentice at GSK Ulverston was selected to receive the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering Award on behalf of the firm.

Dominic Miller met the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Anne and Princess Eugene at after being selected to represent GSK Ulverston at the award ceremony for the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.

The young engineer has recently finished a four year apprenticeship at the company and has begun working towards a degree.

Describing his brief meeting with the Queen, Mr Miller said: “I was chosen by the company’s Early Talent programme manager to attend the ceremony.

“It was a fantastic experience and the Queen asked what my plans were for the future. I was really proud to explain that I had won the scholarship and had my sights set on a degree.”

The Barrow-in-Furness resident has also recently won one of ten scholarships from The Whitworth Scholarship Award, to help him continue his studies.

Mr Miller has now started working towards a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Lancaster University on a four-year part-time course at Furness College.

Describing the selection process Mr Miller said: “I was asked to describe projects I had been involved in; work I had done with younger people to promote engineering; what I considered to be the biggest challenge for engineering in the next decade and to describe how Sir Joseph Whitworth progressed from apprentice to eminent engineer.”

“I felt that the interview was pretty tough and wasn’t too confident but was absolutely elated when less than two weeks later I was told that I had been awarded a scholarship. It was a really proud moment.”
