Drink-driver ploughed car into Barrow wall

A LITHUANIAN man got more than he bargained for after drunkenly ploughing his car into a wall.

Antanas Danielous, of Meetings View, Barrow, pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving without insurance and driving without a licence, when he appeared before Furness Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard Danielous had been drinking heavily last Thursday and drank four bottles of Budweiser on Friday morning before driving his car.

However, as well as being disqualified from driving he could also face deportation after it emerged a European arrest warrant had been issued.

The court heard Danielous, 26, had recently bought an MG Rover for £600 from a customer at a Barrow car wash where he worked.

On Friday Danielous was driving the car in Millstone Avenue, in Barrow, when he lost control and ploughed into the wall of a house.

Ms Judith Knott, prosecuting, said: “A lady was sat in her ground floor living room when she looked out of the window and saw a blue car mount the curb and crash into the wall.

“She could see Mr Danielous in the car and she went to check if he was ok.

“She asked him if she wanted her to contact the police, he said he would phone them but she decided to phone the police anyway.

“She saw the defendant limp and he made his way towards Middlefield. He returned to the car and police arrived – he was obviously drunk.”

When he was breathalysed, Danielous was found to have 66milligrams (mg) of alcohol in 100millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Mr Graeme Jackson, defending, said: “He tells me what happened was that perhaps as a result of a unfamiliarity with the vehicle but also the alcohol.

“He tells me that he has no savings – he spent them on buying this car.

“He wanted to buy the car and sort the paperwork.”

Danielous was banned from driving for 17 months but did not have to pay any court costs because of his financial situation.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court where he faces extradition to Lithuania.
