Customers quit banks for building society

DISSATISFACTION with their high-street banks saw the Cumberland Building Society enjoy a 60 per cent rise in people opening new current accounts in July.

John Leveson: ‘People are looking for an alternative’

The Cumberland – one of only four building societies in the country to offer a full current account service – says the increase is compared with the average number of accounts opened during the previous three months.

A quarter of the customers switched accounts as a direct result of dissatisfaction with their existing bank following well-publicised issues recently faced by a number of national high-street banks.

John Leveson, deputy chief executive of the Cumberland Building Society, said: “The significant increase in new accounts opened indicates that people are looking for an alternative to their existing current account provider.

“The Cumberland offers a traditional approach to banking with local branches and accessible branch managers, but provides a modern current account with features such as internet and mobile banking. As a result, we believe that we are the alternative to the high street banks that many people want.”
