Cumbrian Tarot reader's journey leads her to paint her own cards

Three years ago Jade Ashcroft began painting images for a set of tarot cards.

And after months of determination and hard work her Soulscape Tarot Cards are now complete.

The 38-year-old’s interest in tarot reading was sparked when she was given a set at the age of 18 and since then she has been hooked.

She has studied tarot for years, read cards for hundreds of clients and spent years researching and meditating. So it only seemed right that the next step in her journey would be to actually create a deck herself.

“I wanted to produce something that would help people to find their own spiritual pathway and find their own talents and gifts,” said Jade, who lives in Workington.

“I started painting the images for the cards about three years ago. The Minor Arcana, which are sometimes called the ‘pip’ cards, I started in France last year while staying with my folks.

“The Major Arcana I painted first, they are the images that represent really big life events in the spiritual journey, and they took me two years to paint each of the 22 images – almost one a month.”

And creating tarot cards is just one of many skills to add to Jade’s long list of talents. As well as being an author, artist and tarot consultant, she is also part of successful west Cumbrian band Neter along with Martin Diamond and David Moore.

It could be said that tarot cards helped determine the path Jade’s life was to take, as she decided to attend a university course by turning over a card which revealed an image of a magician meaning the “willpower to do something.” This resulted in her studying a media production degree at Cumbria Institute of the Arts from which she graduated in 2006.

Jade can do tarot readings face-to-face, online and by email. And for those who want to try it themselves, her set of cards can be purchased through the website soulscapes-tarot-cards.co.uk along with a guide book.
