CUMBRIAN street performers have been invited to the launch of an Olympic hero Bradley Wiggins' charity.

Gold medal-winning cyclist Bradley Wiggins has invited the Lindal-based Bread and Butter Theatre Company to perform at the launch of the Bradley Wiggins Foundation.

The foundation aims to promote and encourage participation in sport, to support keen and talented athletes to further their ambition and to help provide equipment and facilities to help more people get into sport.

The event on Sunday will see the company’s Phill Gregg and Simeon Leech entertain the crowds as the overzealous PE teachers and the enthusiastic Wannabe TV crew.

Earlier this year the company spent 20 days entertaining crowds along the Olympic torch relay.

Garry Gifford, a director and performer with the company, said the group has become firm fans of cycling.

He said: “This is the icing on the cake for a great year. We’re delighted to do it and we were delighted even before the Tour de France win and Olympic gold.

“This is a dream gig, he’s a national treasure.”

The launch, which takes place on Sunday, will feature a number of road races allowing cyclists to ride along Wiggins’ regular training routes.

The Ride With Brad Sportive is a 160km route around Lancashire, starting and ending at Victory Park in Barnoldswick.

Participants also have the option of a shorter, 100km route.

The routes include Barley Fell, Waddington Fell, Longridge Fell and the Nick O’ Pendle.

Speaking ahead of the event, Mr Wiggins said: “This brand new event has been specially organised to help celebrate the launch of the Bradley Wiggins Foundation.

“Come and join me on a challenging ride through the stunning Lancashire countryside and experience the roads and climbs I regularly train on.”
