Coniston football tournament in memory of Dalton football ace killed in A590 crash

THE sun shone as some of South Cumbria’s local football teams turned out to remember a former player.
Stuart Shaw, 31, of Castle Wray, Broughton, died last January when he was struck by a car on Lindale Hill.
He was said to have been directing traffic away from the scene of an accident at the time.
The second Stuart ‘Shorty’ Shaw Football Festival, to remember Mr Shaw, was held at the Coniston Sports and Social Club on Saturday.
The tournament featured all four of Mr Shaw’s former clubs: Dalton United, GSK Ulverston Rangers, Swarthmoor and Coniston, and changes venue every year. Mr Shaw’s daughter, Erin, presented the winning trophy to Rangers First XI.
Over £2,000 was raised for the Bluebell Foundation and organisers hope to raise a similar amount for this year’s charity the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team, which was selected by Mr Shaw’s family.
