A former Botchergate bar is to be given a new lease of life from March – as the city’s first Brazilian restaurant.

The lease for the building that was formerly home to Cassa has now been taken over by Brazilian chef and businessman Nei Borgert, who owns a growing chain of similar UK restaurants.

The new Carlisle restaurant will be called Tropeiro.

It will be based on the Brazilian concept of Rodizio, with 20 different cuts of meat cooked barbecue style and carved at the table.

“It’s a very popular style of eating, with lots of different cuts of meat such as beef, chicken, pork, lamb, cut at the table-side – and they only stop when you say stop,” said Nathan Fisk, who works with Mr Borgert.

The chain has seven restaurants in Chester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

The plan is to recruit locally.

Mr said that Mr Borgert has around 20 years of experience of the restaurant trade in the Manchester area and has worked in the ‘fine dining’ side of the trade.

The restaurant building was previously Cassa Bar owned by Carlisle’s Ged Crooks – once dubbed the city’s nightlife king.

In recent years, it became known as a popular live music venue. He vowed to not to let the building stand empty.

Mr Borgert, a married man with a seven-year-old son, is due to visit Carlisle towards the end of the week.
