Businesses in Penrith have only a few days left to vote on whether the town should set up a business improvement district (Bid).

Bids aim to boost trade by using a levy on business rates to raise cash for marketing and other initiatives.

They can be set up only if a majority of businesses, by number and by rateable value, agree in a ballot.

Supporters say the Penrith bid would “release the town’s potential”.

Priorities include a marketing campaign, organising street festivals and events, smartening up businesses, better parking facilities and providing training for businesses.

More than 400 businesses are eligible to vote.

The ballot closes at 5pm on Friday.

Kelvin Dixon, chairman of the bid shadow board said: “This is a unique opportunity for Penrith to take charge of its own destiny and to release the potential that the town has.

“Please use your vote, and vote ‘yes’ to the scheme.”

He also urged doubters to contact him.

Mr Dixon added: “If any business is undecided or not clear as to what they are voting for I urge them to contact either myself or any member of the shadow board for more information about the proposals.

“The important thing to me is that every business has a single vote and it is vital that they use it.”

The result will be announced on Monday.

Businesses in Carlisle rejected proposals for a Bid there in September.
