A TOP government minister is travelling to Barrow for a whistlestop tour.

Vince Cable MP, the secretary of state for business, innovation and skills will take a tour of local businesses in Barrow tomorrow.

Mr Cable is set to visit Dong Energy in Barrow and will be handed a business plan for the area.

On his arrival in Barrow, MP John Woodcock will present the business secretary with a new strategy document setting out how Furness can become a national growth area for manufacturing jobs in the years ahead.

Local business leaders and councils have jointly signed the new economic vision for the Furness area after a process led by Mr Woodcock.

Mr Woodcock said: “The government’s economic plan may not be working across the UK, but there is so muchpotential here.

“The renewed vision we are publishing sets out our determination to buck the national trend and make Furness the engine powering the Cumbrian economy in the years to come.

“Changes over the last decade and major investment on the horizon give us the chance to become a national cradle for advanced manufacturing.

“It is important we seize this opportunity for businesses of all sizes to create jobs, and I look forward to discussing these issues with Dr Cable during his visit.”

Mr Cable is also set to visit LED specialists Njo Technology Ltd in Kendal, and South Lakes MP Tim Farron said he will use the opportunity to discuss jobs in the South Lakes.

He said: “We are fortunate in our area to have lots of successful business stories, particularly in the green technology sector, such as Gilkes and Njo.

“I look forward to bringing Vince to see this outstanding example of South Lakes business.

“Our meeting will be a great opportunity for everyone to discuss how both local and national government can work together to create more well paid jobs locally.”
