Bus roof ripped off after it hits Carlisle bridge

These dramatic pictures show the moment a bus lost its short roof – as it attempted to drive under a low bridge.
The Reays open-top double-decker usually has a small section of roof to protect the passengers in the front few rows of the top deck.
This was peeled back and left hanging off the railway bridge over Crown Street, Carlisle, at about 7.45pm yesterday.
Police shut the road while they removed the swinging sheet of metal.
The bus was out of service and the only person on board was the driver, who was not hurt.
Today, Reays Coaches Ltd issued a statement confirming one of its open-top double-decker buses was involved in a collision.
“The bus was returning to Reays’ Carlisle depot from a day in service with our Lakes Hopper service in the Lake District,” it said. “The bus is owned and operated by Reays.
“It is expected to be fully repaired and back in service by the end of this week.
“The company is carrying out an investigation into the incident.”
The bridge suffered no structural damage and delayed just one train for three minutes.
A spokesman for Network Rail said it happened at a very quiet time on that line.
The incident also occurred almost right beside a signal box, allowing Network Rail staff to assess the bridge immediately.
