A FUND which helps Cockermouth School children to further their studies abroad is appealing for more support.

The Europe Prize Scholarship Fund was set up in 2000 after the town won the Europe Prize.

It has supported 85 children from the Cockermouth area on trips abroad.

The fund has just under £4,000 left but much of this will be used to award bursaries to students for their trips abroad next year.

The scholarship committee, which includes representatives from the school, twinning committee, town council, Round Table and a church representative, will meet next spring to hear presentations from students before bursaries are awarded for them to travel abroad on educational trips.

David Bertram, chairman and treasurer, said: “For many of these youngsters it is the first time they have travelled abroad on their own which is a great challenge.

“It gives them the ideal opportunity to fully organise, plan their trip and learn from the experience.

“I know the fund is greatly appreciated by Cockermouth School.”

Presentations from eight students who were helped by the fund last year were given on Tuesday at the school’s eco-centre.
