WORKINGTON MP Sue Hayman is to meet Business Secretary Sajid Javid to discuss proposed changes to steelworkers' pensions.
The Government is set to launch a consultation on changes to pensions law as part of efforts to save Tata’s UK steel-making assets.
The suggestions include cutting the British Steel Pension Fund's liabilities by benchmarking pensions to the consumer prices index (CPI) rather than the higher retail prices index (RPI).
This could save £2.5bn but would reduce benefits to those receiving pensions.
Mrs Hayman says this will affect staff at Tata Steel Products in Workington, which has recently been sold to Greybull Capital.
She has raised the issue in the Commons with Mr Javid, who agreed to a meeting to discuss her concerns.
She said: “Some of these workers have been there for over 40 years and are clearly distressed and worried. These have been loyal employees – they’ve given their working life to the plant."
