DIRECT flights from Newcastle Airport to New York resume this week.

United Airlines launched a seasonal non-stop service between Newcastle and New York Newark Liberty International Airport last year.

The service resumes on Thursday and runs six times a week until September 6.

David Laws, chief executive of Newcastle Airport, said: “The New York flights allow people to access onward connections to 300 destinations in the US and Canada.”

Newcastle International completed a £14m revamp of its departure lounge last year, which opened in December, and now offers direct flights to 74 destinations.

Of the 4.6m passengers who used the airport in 2014, 170,000, or around four per cent, originated in Cumbria.

Passenger numbers are forecast to hit 4.9m this year.

Other airlines operating from Newcastle include Emirates, which has been flying to Dubai since 2007, British Airways, Air France/KLM easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2.com, while the Spanish low-cost airline Vueling began flights to Barcelona in March.
