Two Lake District Hotels have been named among the 100 best hotels in the UK in a list drawn up their peers.

The first Hoteliers’ Hotels Top 100 list was compiled by industry experts and was published by the trade magazine The Caterer and Sky.

Gilpin Hotel and Lake House and Linthwaite House, which are less than two miles apart, just outside Bowness-on-Windermere, appear in 68th and 89th places respectively.

General manager of Linthwaite House, Andrew Nicholson, said: “It is an honour for Linthwaite to be held in such high esteem by our industry peers, alongside some of the most famous hotels in the country.

“We take great pride in offering stylish, comfortable accommodation and attentive service, as well as award-winning food in our restaurant, so it is a real thrill to be recognised for all our hard work.”

Hampshire country house hotel Chewton Glen, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary, was named the best in the country.

Amanda Afiya, editor of The Caterer, said “Hoteliers know their industry, its pitfalls and opportunities best, so who better to ask when compiling a list of the top hotels in the UK?

“We’re lucky to have so many wonderful hotels across UK and excited to be launching this list. There are, of course, many ways of ranking and evaluating hotels, but there’s nothing quite as special as peer-group recognition.”

The accolade comes shortly after Linthwaite House changed hands.

The South African boutique hotel chain Leeu Collection, owned by the Indian industrialist Analjit Singh, paid an undisclosed sum to buy the hotel from long-time owners Mike and Jean Bevans, and their partner Simon Doddrell, in April.

The Bevans had been there since 1990.
