One of Cumbria's best-known businesswomen got something different at the supermarket - a special award.

Lisa Smith, who runs Ginger Bakers in Kendal, was presented with the prize in the Co-op branch in Grange-over-Sands. This was part of the supermarket firm's celebrations of British Food Fortnight, which runs until Sunday, October 8.

She said: "We are delighted to have received this award and recognition as part of Love British Food Fortnight, it is now on proud display in our reception area.”

Breige Donaghy, director of delicious food, Co-op, added: “While the likes of Mary Berry and Delia Smith may spring to mind when we think of female foodie influencers, actually culinary heroines are all around us from within our families, to our local farmers, growers and producers – cheese-makers, chocolatiers, bakers and brewers.

"Our sponsorship of Love British Food Fortnight is a real opportunity to celebrate all that’s great about the best of seasonal British food and drink, something Co-op are passionate about as well as our foodie heroines, who are keeping British food thriving.”

Ginger Bakers is one of eight Cumbrian producers which is having its products sold in Co-ops around the county as part of a local sourcing programme.

The others are the Penrith-based Appleby Brewery, the Handsome Brewery, based in Bowston, near Kendal, The Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery Company and Stringers in Ulverston, confectioner George Romney and tea and coffee merchant Farrer’s – both of which are in Kendal – and preserves maker Cumbrian Delights, based in Staveley.
