Kendal businessman Joe Cottam has been selected as a regional finalist in a national competition to find Britain’s top tradesperson.

In an event sponsored by Screwfix the 46-years-old maintenance tradesman is now just one step closer to reaching the national final.

Eight regional finalists will be selected for this, which takes place at Wembley in London.

On June 25, Mr Cottam will attend the north west final against the other successful candidates, where they will all have to complete a number of tasks.

He said that he thinks his determination for success, customer focused mind-set and passion for the industry will help him stand out from the crowd.

The trade name of his company is, ‘Just Call Joe’, and Mr Cottam said: “I started work when I was 16-years-old at a construction company. After five years trade experience I went on to gain a degree in construction management and then spent three years in contract management.

“I then worked for 17 years as a teacher at Highlands College in Jersey.”

He added: “I enjoy meeting different people every day as a handyman and knowing that no one day is like the next. As a maintenance tradesman, I am able to leave every day with instant feedback and gratification from clients.”

The marketing director at Screwfix, Graham Smith, said: "We have been inundated with entries this year and as always, the standard is outstanding. This award is only given to those who demonstrate excellence in their business and dedication to the job.

“Being selected as a regional finalist highlights the great work that Joe is doing. Along with our other finalists, he has demonstrated a passion for the trade, a willingness to go the extra mile and to always leave customers satisfied.”

Screwfix has almost 1,200 stores in 10 countries in Europe, Russia and Turkey.
