DIRECT flights from Manchester to China will deliver a major boost to Cumbria, says the director of the county's Local Enterprise Partnership.

Hainan Airlines will fly four times a week from Manchester to Beijing from June 10, making Manchester the only UK airport outside London with a direct year-round service to mainland China.

Graham Haywood, director of Cumbria LEP, said: "The flights open up much closer connectivity between Cumbria and the huge Chinese market, which will increase opportunities for the county’s businesses.

“It is particularly good news for the tourism industry. Cumbria has a lot that appeals to Chinese tourists.

“When you add to that easy access from Manchester, there is potential for a large increase in the number of Chinese tourists visiting the county, which would bring significant economic benefits to the area."

Carlisle, Penrith, Barrow and Windermere are well placed to benefit, given that Northern Rail and TransPennine Express operate direct train services to Manchester Airport.

More than 100,000 people from the north of England fly to mainland China every year but, until now, have had to travel indirectly via London or other overseas hubs.

It is estimated the Hainan route – which will take 10.5 hours – should deliver an economic boost to the UK worth £250m.
