Carlisle-based business law firm Baines Wilson LLP is running two new Employment Law Update seminars in north and south Cumbria.

The seminars will be hosted by the Employment & Training Team at Baines Wilson LLP who will guide delegates through the most recent changes to Employment Law.

In particular, the latest case from the Court of Justice of the European Union on travel time being classed as working time, the Living Wage being introduced in April 2016 and the proposals to make far reaching changes to workers being able to take strike action.

They will also be covering the new Fit for Work scheme introduced this year and will be joined by guest speakers, Chris Rhodes, chief nursing officer for Fit for Work and her colleagues to offer delegates their perspective on the new scheme.

Absence is still a major issue for employers and many are unaware that they, as well as GPs, can refer employees who have been off sick from work for four weeks or more for a voluntary occupational health assessment.

Fit for Work will identify obstacles preventing the employee from returning to work and a Return to Work Plan will be agreed, providing recommendations tailored to the employee’s needs, which can replace the need for a fit note.

This is potentially a great benefit to employers without their own occupational health support.

Delegates will have the opportunity to ask any questions during the course of the seminar and to network with HR professionals and business owners.

The first seminar will take place at the Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge on Tuesday October 13, from 9:30am until 12:30pm, with the second taking place a week later at the Rheged Centre in Penrith on Tuesday October 20, at the same time.
