Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has praised Kendal firm Gilbert, Gilkes and Gordon as a "world leader" in hydropower.

The Lib Dem leader was speaking following a fact-finding visit to the firm's factory at Canal Head North.

Gilbert Gilkes and Gordon was established 160 years ago and today employs 250 people.

The company produces turbines for hydroelectric projects, as well as industrial pumps.

Its operations include Gilkes USA, in Tacoma, Washington, as well as Gilkes Inc, in League City, Texas, and Gilkes Japan.

Its arm Gilkes Energy concentrates on working with landowners to provide hydropower projects.

Mr Farron, said: “It was fascinating to visit Gilkes again, and get an update about the company and the head office here in Kendal.

“Gilkes is world-leading in the hydropower sector, promoting renewable energy production through projects across the globe. It also provides a huge number of jobs to the local economy, from apprenticeships for young people through to highly-skilled engineering jobs.”

The firm was recently listed in The London Stock Exchange’s ‘1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain’ report, highlighting businesses that are set for major growth.
