INNOVIA Films has devised a peelable packaging that opens with no fuss or effort, so ending the problem of “wrap rage”.

This is a concept familiar to anyone who has grappled with plastic packaging for foodstuffs that stubbonly refuses to open. And when it does burst free, the force applied sends the contents flying out.

Wigton-based Innovia's peelable biaxially-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film, Propafilm™ RCP, aims to solve this problem.

The company says that seals are easy to open even if consumers have physical limitations. No excessive force is required and there is no need for scissors, sharp implements that might cause injury.

Amaia Cowan, Innovia Films’ product manager – speciality pckaging films, said: “Brand owners are waking up to the fact that easy-open is becoming a major purchase consideration for consumers, especially those with reduced dexterity.

“We have listened to consumers who often complain about the difficulty of getting into conventional packaging.

“Our easy-to-open packaging range makes their life that little bit easier. £Rest assured, these films continue to protect the products they wrap while providing an enhanced product experience.”

Propafilm™ RCP is manufactured at Wigton in two thicknesses and comes in heavy duty, high barrier and snap-wrap options.

Innovia says the seal strength is consistent and the film can be used on existing packaging machines without adjustments.

Another benefit is that product spillage is hugely reduced. With traditional films, opening packs often results in the packaging tearing.

But Propafilm™ RCP provides reliable clean and neat opening, without destroying the pack. Because the pack remains intact, resealing becomes an option when a label is applied.

This allows products to stay fresh in kitchen store cupboards. The film also acts as a barrier to moisture and smells, making it suitable to preserve foods such as dried and chocolate-based products.
