A Cumbrian egg producer is working with McDonald's to create a virtual reality roadshow to attract younger people into agriculture.

The Lakes Free Range Egg Company's cutting-edge facility at Stainton, near Penrith, is also helping to make people aware of the provenance of the food that McDonald's serves.

Owners David and Helen Brass, with daughters Rachel and Lizzie, visited the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh to see the roadshow in action.

Members of their team will also be visiting the roadshow tour bus at other locations this summer.

‘Follow our Foodsteps’ is an interactive visitor experience that focuses on the McDonald’s UK food chain story.

The Lakes Free Range Egg Company is a long-standing supplier to McDonald's and its hens play a leading role in the roadshow, which travels next to Kent County Show and the Royal Welsh Shows.

A film crew spent several days at Stainton filming hens in their natural environment to help tell the story and create a realistic experience.

Mr Brass, chief executive of the The Lakes Free Range Egg Company, said: “I know from first-hand experience that food producers in the UK have a passion for what they do, and the standards we set are very high.

"But we need more people to get involved and skilled at every level.

"This unique glimpse into how food is produced, processed and prepared for restaurants should inspire some of our next generation to ask more questions and get involved in the food production industry.

“From what we have seen at the Highland Show, people really want to know more about where their food comes from and we have met some who have shown interest in that next step – a connection to a career with food production. ”
