Lancashire commuters are expected to face delays over the bank holiday weekend.

Network Rail has said some journeys may be affected due to ongoing maintenance work.

A spokesman from the operator said: “the majority of the network will be open as usual but some journeys may be affected by essential engineering work.

That includes Virgin services between Carlisle and Preston all day on April 29.

Customers who use trains to and from Oxenholme and Lancaster could be affected.”

The work also includes:

Crewe to Warrington between 12.15 on April 28 and 11.55 on May 1

Wigan to Preston between 12.15 April 28 and 05.00 May 1

Weaver to Wavertree between 12.15 April 29 and 11.55 May 1

Into Manchester Victoria between 00.50 April 30 and 04.40 May 2.

Birkenhead Central and Liverpool Central between 00.50 April 30 and 04.40 May 2
