One of the best-known beauty businesses in Carlisle has been given a makeover worth about £80,000.

Elysée Beauty and Aesthetics, formerly Salon Elysee, on St Cuthbert's Lane, in the city centre, has been revamped.

This has seen the business move into part of the ground floor of the building its is in, install several pieces of new equipment and create three new jobs.

The firm is jointly owned by husband and wife Christopher and Jacqui Weir, who took it on in 2006 following the death of Mr Weir's sister Elizabeth, who set it up 33 years ago.

Mrs Weir said the time had come to freshen things up.

"We just wanted to update and become more modern," she added.

"We wanted to keep the Elysée name to maintain the connection but just to modernise."

The downstairs area will be devoted to nails with two new manicure tables as well as a seat for pedicures. New equipment has also been installed upstairs, most notably a £30,000 Cynton laser, which enables the business to offer skin rejuvenation treatments.

"It is something which is growing in popularity and we are hoping to get more people with this," Mrs Weir said.

"It is a really good piece of kit."

She added that the business will be able to expand on the number of anti-ageing treatments it can offer - including dealing with red lines and permanent hair removal - as a result of the revamp, which has taken more than a year.

Mrs Weir is also very proud of her staff.

She said: "Our therapists are extremely well trained and we put a lot of investment into training."

Mrs Weir also said that the firm was getting more male business.

"More and more men are starting to look after themselves," she added.
