Restaurants in Cumbria have been named in the top 10 best rated restaurants in the UK by users of TripAdvisor.

The Old Stamphouse Restaurant in Ambleside and l’Enclume in Cartmel came in eighth and tenth place in the Travellers’ Choice Awards.

The awards honour travellers' favourite fine dining establishments worldwide, based on the millions of reviews and opinions on TripAdvisor.

Award winners are determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for restaurants around the world, gathered over a 12-month period.

The top spot was reserved for Raymond Blanc’s Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons which was also named the fourth best restaurant in the world.

The UK was also the best represented country in the awards, with three restaurants breaking into the worldwide top 10.

TripAdvisor spokesperson, Hayley Coleman, said: “With more UK restaurants in the world top ten than any other country for the second year running, the UK has again proved that it’s a heavyweight player in the world of fine dining.”

The title of number one restaurant in the world went to Spain’s Martin Berasategui in Lasarte for the second year in a row.

The news comes only two weeks after l’Enclume was awarded two Michelin stars.

There were hopes that The French by Simon Rogan in Manchester might have earned a Michelin star making it the city’s only restaurant with a star but failed to make it into the guide.

Rogan has since ended his partnership with The French by Simon Rogan and Mr Cooper's House & Garden saying that he was going to focus his efforts on the operation at Cartmel.

He said: "Our work with The Midland has been a great opportunity and we've built something very special with The French and Mr Cooper's.

“It's now time to concentrate our efforts on developing and growing our businesses in Cartmel with L'Enclume and Rogan & Co as well as ensuring that Fera at Claridge's continues to be operated to our high standards."

Head chef, Adam Reid will retain the head chef post at The French while his counterpart at Mr Cooper's, Robert Taylor, will also stay in post.

The restaurant will be renamed Adam Reid at The French in November.
