A SYRUP sponge pudding from Cumbria is in the running to be crowned 'best dessert and pudding' in the national Quality Food Awards.

The product from Country Puddings, based at Flusco near Penrith, is one of six shortlisted finalists for the coveted 'Gold Q' award.

It is up against competition from the likes of Tesco, Marks & Spencer and the Co-op.

The finalists were hand picked by a panel of 200 food and drink experts including chefs, cookery writers, restaurateurs and food technologists.

Each product is scored for its taste, flavour, texture, aroma, ingredients, innovation, packaging, presentation and price point.

The winners will be revealed at a ceremony in London on November 10.

Lynne Mallinson, a farmer's wife from Dacre who founded the business in her kitchen in 2000, said she was “delighted” to have one of her products shortlisted.

She added: “As a local company, it is fantastic to see that we are competing with the big nationals in our category.

“Being part of these accolades shows that people love our puddings and it gives our small team the recognition they deserve for all their hard work.”

Country Puddings' syrup sponge is no stranger to plaudits, having picked up a Great Taste Award this summer.
