Cumbrian media company CN Group – which owns in-Cumbria – celebrated two wins and two highly commended honours at the prestigious Regional Press Awards 2017.

The Mail triumphed as the best daily newspaper in the UK with a circulation under 20,000 and was also highly commended in the hotly contested Front Page of the Year for its coverage of the fire at the House of Lords building in Barrow in January 2017.

Meanwhile, Jon Colman played a blinder, winning the Weekly Sports Journalist of the year title for his work for The Cumberland News.

The Cumberland News was also highly commended in the best Weekly Newspaper with a circulation above 15,000 category, narrowly missing out to the Camden New Journal.

The Regional Press Awards are organised by the Society of Editors to celebrate the very best of local journalism.

Speaking after the awards, which took place at the IET London, editor of The Mail Vanessa Sims, said: “This award is testament to the hard work and dedication of all The Mail’s staff – day in, day out.

“Thank you to all of our readers who support us by buying and reading our content, in print and online, and allowing us to serve our communities.

“The Mail’s aim is to report on the stories that matter to our readers and we will continue to do so.”
