HAWKSHEAD Brewery has toasted success at a prestigious regional award and is now set to compete at national level.

The brewer, which is in Staveley, took the overall gold and silver for its Tonka and Windermere Pale beers respectively in the “small pack” section of the Society of Independent Brewers North West Regional Beer Competition.

A total of 260 beers, from 50 breweries, were judged by some 100 independent brewers, industry representatives and experienced beer drinkers at the Macron Stadium, Bolton.

Alex Brodie, owner of Hawkshead Brewery said, “Tonka is our head brewer’s baby.

“It is great to see such an innovative beer do so well and it must be the first beer using tonka beans – a fruit of the South American Cumaru tree – to win such a prestigious award.

“We are also delighted to see Windermere Pale pick up the Small Pack Silver. It goes to show there is still life in low gravity session beers.”

Another Cumbrian brewery Hesket Newmarket, near Keswick, won the overall bronze in the “small pack” category for its Old Carrock brew.

All Gold category winners are now entered into the SIBA National Finals which take place at BeerX in Sheffield in March.
