THE Crown and Mitre Hotel in Carlisle is undergoing a £120,000 refurbishment.

The bedrooms at the hotel on English Street are being brought up to modern day standard.

David Crossley, general manager, said: "We are knocking through some of the bedrooms to make bigger ones.

"Twelve bedrooms will become six and there will be four other new ones, so 10 new rooms in total."

Mr Crossley says the hotel's owners, Peel, is spending about £25,000 on some of the rooms. He said: "They are being brought to modern day standard. Some of them are more like suites. We have done two of the rooms and are working on third one now."

He described the decor as "modern, contemporary with a bit of a twist".

The bathrooms are also being replaced and some of the rooms have walk in rainforest-style showers.

He said: "The current refurbishment is part of an ongoing scheme. "The pool was refurbished about four years ago and the front of the hotel two years ago.

"We've had new carpets put down in reception and the gents toilets are being done out too. "New furniture for the reception area is due to arrive in the next eight weeks.

"The reception area is being tiled so it looks nice." He said this year had been "a busy year" for the hotel.

"It's basically been tourist season all year round. We've had a few flood victims living with us - some of them are still here - which is good for us but not so good for them."
