A union has issued an update on what’s happening with shop-chain Wilko after members met with administrators.

GMB met with administrators and the company as part of the formal consultation process, Andy Prendergast, GMB’s national secretary, said.

He added: “We can confirm there have been expressions of interest from organisations who are considering taking over at least some parts of the business

“These are still at an early stage, but means there are genuine grounds for hope.

“Whilst this process continues staff will continue to be paid and kept on.

“All stores are continuing to trade, and deliveries of new stock will continue.”

The news that Wilko entered administration meant potential closures for popular locations in Cumbria, like Workington and Carlisle, the latter of which was a significant draw for the market it was near.

Carlise’s Market Hall relies a large amount on rent from Wilko, and questions as to its future loom in the meantime.
